The idea

Before you press play, you usually want to know one thing: is this going to scare me too much to watch at night? I built Can I Watch It At Night? to answer that. You type in a movie or show, tell it how much scary you can handle, and it tells you whether you can, or should, watch it at night.

What I built

A full-stack movie recommendation app. It reads a title’s plot sentiment and genre, compares them with the scare categories you pick from more than 20, and flags whether the title suits night-time viewing. In my evaluation, it got night-time suitability right 95.6% of the time.

It is built with React, Node.js and Express, and draws on the TMDB, OpenAI and Wikipedia APIs.

How it works

I curated a custom database of 9,500+ titles and gave each one vector embeddings, so recommendations could be tailored. In my own evaluations, that raised the relevance of the top three suggestions by 86%.

The backend uses TF-IDF and cosine similarity with weighted heuristics, and responds in a median of under 1.5 seconds. I also prototyped semantic filtering with OpenAI embeddings.

What's next

Semantic filtering is still a prototype. I tested OpenAI embeddings to match titles by meaning instead of keywords, but the live ranking runs on TF-IDF. Next, I would move it into the main recommendations and re-measure the 95.6% accuracy and the top-three relevance gain.
